The pre-workshop field trip included visits to various cultural heritage sites in the vicinity of Kavieng. The participants visited the prehistoric sites 'Lapita' site at Bagail which has the remains of a village that was occupied between 2,900 to 2,700 years ago. The workshop also visited a WWII Japanese pill box (pictured here) and relics of the ill-fated Marquis de Ray expedition.
The SWPCHTP began at the Kavieng Hotel with welcoming speeches given by Dr. Summerhayes (the PNG Program Director), Ms. Hayakawa (SPINF) and Mr. Mandui (National Museum and Art Gallery, PNG). This was followed by an introduction to the program by Dr. Summerhayes describing the importance of the efficient management of both contemporary and past cultural heritage. In addition to the SPINF, Dr. Summerhayes also thanked the National and Provincial Government bodies who gave permission for the program to go ahead. In particular, Dr. Summerhayes thanked the New Ireland Province (NIP.) Administrator, Moses Mokis, and the NIP Assistant Administrator, Simon Passingan. Dr. Summerhayes then presented an overview of the program describing its scope and objectives.
While in Kavieng, the workshop visited Lemakot village and had the privilege to see the Giri culture group. One of the highlights was the performance by one of the workshop participants, the former NIP Premier and Paramount Chief, Mr Demas, Kavavu (as can be seen opposite).

South-West Pacific Cultural Heritage Training Program: Papua New Guinea.

Kavieng Town 2001

Prior to this program, the most recent cultural heritage training workshop held in Papua New Guinea (PNG) occurred in 1978. This was the first ever program of its kind to be held in New Ireland Province. Given the long period of time since the last cultural heritage workshop in PNG an additional goal was to provide new links between cultural officers in the provinces with the National Museum (Summerhayes 2001b:6). The result of the new links was the improved coordination of heritage management in the preservation of PNG's cultural heritage. The 2001 workshop was run in Kavieng town and Tatau village, New Ireland Province. The program was run by Dr. Glenn Summerhayes with the assistance of Mr. Matthew Leavesley. The participants were:
