It is important that you organise your schedule and are cognizant of all the assessment due dates during the semester. In addition to the following table below, you should be aware of all the principal dates in the ANU Calander. View the Calander by clicking the 'principal dates' link on the left hand side of this page.
Course assessment will be decided after consultation with students at the first lecture and the first tutorial. However, as a ground rule, there will be at least one essay, tutorial participation assessment and a final form of assessment to demonstrate breadth of knowledge.

1. Week 6 Exercise (drawing on the DVD from Week 5 and to be handed in on Thursday March 29 to the School Office at 1pm
In 750 words (give or take 10%) address the following question:
- To what extent do individual script their own lives and to what extent are their lives scripted by social forces?
Answer this question either by:
a) comparing two participants in 28 Up and assess the extent to which their lives were shaped by specific social forces
b) taking someone you know and comparing them with a character on 28 Up.
This excercise does not require any formal referencing. It is intended to help you reflect on the course material presented thus far.

2. 2,000 word essay
- The essay will be due on Monday of Week 10 (i.e., 7 May).
- The topics will be discussed during tutorials and can be found here
- Time will be devoted during the tutorial in Week 7 and Week 9 to discussing essay writing and expectations. For the Week 9 tutorial, you should consult the course essay-writing guide. In addition, students are always encouraged to see their tutor or the Course Coordinator to discuss any problems with essay writing.
- An essay plan will be handed into the School Office by 1pm on Monday 23 April. The content of this two-page draft will be explained in Week 7 before the break. It will contain a half-page essay outline, and an annotated bibliography with at least two journal articles, two books and two websites. Note that there will also be a special lecture from the library on the Thursday of Week 6 to help you prepare your essay plan.
- In addition, Week 12 will be devoted to handing back the essays. During this week students should nominate a time to see their tutor in order to receive 10 to 15 minutes feedback on their essay. This consultation will replace the weekly tutorial that week.
- Please consult the Sociology Extension Policy and guidelines on plagiarism attached to this course outline.
3. A 2,000-word Course Summary (Synoptic Essay)
The Synoptic Essay is due on Tuesday June 12, 1pm at the School Office.
- This component will be based on attendance and, more importantly, the quality of participation.
The weighting of the components is open to negotiation.
