17 October - Just a reminder about tomorrow

EMPLOYMENT AND PAID WORK EXPERIENCE OVER SUMMER AND DURING SEMESTER BREAKS

The Vocational Employment Strategy (an initiative of Care and Protection Services within the department of Disability Housing and Community Services) are looking for students in social work, psychology and the social sciences who may be interested in paid work experience during semester breaks or who are looking to enter employment upon completion of their current study. This is a wonderful opportunity for those interested in working with children and young people. All successful applicants will receive induction training and on the job mentoring and support.

Rinkje Boothman from Care and Protection Services is attending the ANU to conduct an information session On Wednesday 18 October, 1pm-2pm Manning Clark Centre Theatre 3. For more information, please contact alastair.greig@anu.edu.au

10 October - A number of students have been asking about the interpretation of the Reflective Marker 2 question that is due this week. Here is our response: Spatial patterning just means how our cities and suburbs are organised, how our landscape looks and the relations between town and country. Basically the way humans beings are dispersed across the landscape.

It's not a trick question, don't worry, it's just a way of letting you discuss everything from the environment lecture through to rural Australia while thinking about the issues of inequality from the first module

3 October - A postgraduate student from SRES would like some volunteers from our class to stay behind on Friday for 5 or ten minutes to conduct a survey on environmental issues. We encourage you to participate if you have a spare few minutes. Here is what she has to say:

As a postgraduate environmental science student at ANU, I am conducting a research project regarding Education for Sustainability. I am attempting to determine whether information about sustainability is included across the disciplines of the undergraduate curriculum. To this end, I am conducting a survey asking undergraduate students if they have heard about sustainability in their coursework and if they think that the topic is important and relevant to their lives and field of study.

3 October - A number of students arranged with catherine for Alastair to hand back their essay. Those students can drop by Alastair's offcie anytime on Thursday to pick them up.

3 October - Remember that there are still lectures this week but in place of your tutorial, you will receive your essay back from your tutor. Please sign up for a 10-15 minute chat with your tutor.

28 September - It's been pointed out to me that this week's link for the tutorial questions referred to an old link from 2003. My apologies and you'll now find this week's tutorial questions are updated. The old link referred to a Reflective Marker being due and you can now breathe easily as that isn't due until 12/13 October.

27 September - There will be a special showing of last week's videos in the Hayden Allen Tank between 5-6pm tomorrow (28 September) for those who missed them. Feel free to simply turn up.

27 September - Some people have been unable to find the Mullins article for this week's tutorial. On WebCT, click 'tutorial readings' and then the file called 'tutorial readings'. You will find that the Kelly article and the Mullins article are in the same pdf file.

22 September - Today's lecture in HA Tank contains two videos that belong to Alastair. If you can't make it and want a repeat showing, please let Alastair know and we'll arrange a convenient time for all those who are interested.

15 September - Just a reminder that your essays are due in on Monday 18 September at 5pm. And once you submit them, you might be able to turn your head to the challenge of interpreting the illustration of our website opening page. The best intepretation will be announced at the final lecture and the winner will receive a selection of sociology books, including Alastair's book The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, about Australian housing in the post-war era. Please put your postings on the webct discussion board.

21 August - ANU Summer Scholarship Scheme.

The Faculty of Arts has allowed the School of Social Sciences to offer one scholarship under the ANU Summer Scholarship Scheme.

http://www.anu.edu.au/graduate/srs/

This scholarship allows pre-Honours students participating in this program within the School an opportunity to experience what life might be like at post-graduate level. They are given office space, library facilities, full board at Burgmann College and a stipend of around $130 per week.

I have received the go-ahead to offer one Summer Scholarship for a student who intends to enroll in Honours within our School next year. The closing date for applications is 31 August and applicants should submit their applications to Julie Gorrell, Attention: Summer Scholarships, Faculty of Arts.

Students must:

- complete the form on the website above,

- find a willing supervisor for the summer,

- submit their cv with academic transcript,

- and list two referees.

If you have any questions, please contact Alastair.

8 August - On the announcement below from 1 August, I might have misled you all in class last week. The 17th August is next week, not this week. This means that the Honours meeting hosted by Prof. Hopkins is not this Thursday, but next Thursday. My apologies for any confusion.

3 August - Just a reminder that tomorrow's lecture will feature a documentary entitled 'From Love or Money', which is a history of women and work in Australia. The footage is fascinating and even though I'll only be showing half the video, I encourage you all to see the whole documentary as it relates very closely to our discussions of the baby bonus, women and jobs, the packaging of femininity and the Australian settlement. It will be available in the Chifley Reserve section, G 4 7 HD6220.M35 1983

1 August - IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT CONCERNING HONOURS - There will be a meeting for all students who are contemplating doing Honours in Sociology or who would like to know more about doing Honours. Friday 28 July – Last day to add a Semester 2 course without Financial Penalty

28 July - Starting next week, we'll be using the Carter textbook for tutorials. If you don't yet have the textbook and you're witing for your copy from the Co-op bookshop, then you can download the reading for next week by going to webct and then clicking the 'tutorial reading' site. For copyright reasons, I can only do this for next week.

28 July - Please note that today is the last day to enrol in a course without financial penalty.

28 July - This has been a bad week -technologically speaking. There was no audiostreaming for the lecture today because of a computer malfunction. From now on, I'll be bringing along my own laptop. The lecture can still be accessed bby using the library copy in Chifley Reserve.

27 July - A couple of apologies. Sorry for finishing a bit late today, but I was a bit thrown by our technological problems. It also meant that there was no library tape (sorry again), although I note that the audiostreamed lecture is available on webct (minus the first five frustrating minutes).

27 July - The two class representatives for SOCY2033 are Carleigh Dallen and Dayle Stubbs. I will place their details on the website shortly.

27 July - Tutorials begin today. Please make sure you discuss the assessment scheme in your tutorial. Also, this week's reading can be downloaded from webct. From next week, we will be using the text book. I have ordered more copies into the Co-op Bookshop, but if it doesn't arrive within the next couple of days, then next week's reading will also be up on webct for you to download.

21 July - The lectures are now available for reviewing on WebCT. Please note that you can also podcast the lectures. Apparently we are the first course at ANU to do this, so I would be grateful to hear from people who experiment with it.

21 July - Two people have come forward as nominees for Class Representative. I'd like to thank them and I will introduce them to the class next week.

20 July - The course is now underway. Thank you for providing your tutorial options. If you go to WebCT and click on 'tutorial lists', you will find the tutorial allocation. Everyone got either their first or second preference.

19 July - When downloading the tutorial readings for Weeks 2 and 9 from WebCT, do not try to print straight from WebCT. Click on the file, then click 'Save a copy' at the top left of the document and save the pdf file onto your desktop or your hard drive. Then you can print the readings.

17 July - The tutorial readings for Weeks 2 and 9 are now available for you to download on WebCT. These, along with your text by Carter (see July 3) are all the resources you need for tutorials. The pdf file for the two readings contains 2.23MB.

11 July - Please note that the provisional timetable has changed the rooms for our course. On Thursday 2pm we are now in John Dedman 102 and the Friday 12pm lecture is in the Hayden Allen Tank.

3 July - The textbook for SOCY2033 is David Carter's new book, Dispossession, Dreams and Diversity: Issues in Australian Studies, published by Pearson Longman. You can find the book in the Co-op Bookshop, on the stand opposition the sociology section. Alastair will keep a spare copy in his office for students who wish to borrow it on a 2-hour loan. He will also lodge a copy in the Reserve section of the Chifley library.

2 June - There have been requests from students wishing to enrol in the course without prerequisites. In these cases, the university enrolment system (ISIS - Interactive Student Information System) will reject your initial request by 'locking' you out with an 'error' message. If you are experiencing this problem, the best way to solve it is to contact Alastair by phone or email and fill out a Faculty of Arts 'Request to Waive Prerequisites' form. This available from the School of Social Sciences Office (Rm 2132), or you can download it here. Alastair will then sign it and the School of Social Sciences Office will issue you with a permission code to allow you to 'override' ISIS.

1 June - I am in the process of updating this course website for second semester of 2006. In the meantime, if you have any queries about the course - or if you have any suggestions for improving the website - please feel free to contact me at alastair.greig@anu.edu.au.
