Dr. Luise Hercus was Reader in Sanskrit at ANU but since her retirement she has worked in the Linguistics Department, Faculty of Arts, concentrating on Aboriginal languages, which she has been studying for 35 years. She has specialised in the study of languages on the brink of extinction.Among her published works are grammars of Wembawemba (Victoria) of Paakantyi (Darling River) and Arabana-Wangkangurru (Lake Eyre Basin) and work is in progress on Wirangu (Great Australian Bight). She has also studied songs and mythological traditions, particularly in the Lake Eyre Basin.
