What is Italian Studies?

Italian Studies is a rich and diversified area of study allowing you, the learner the opportunity to become “an intercultural traveller, moving between different cultural spaces” and building bridges between cultures. In your study of Italian you will discover the inextricable link between language and culture and become aware of linguistic and cultural processes in Italian interaction and also in your own language. From Introductory to Advanced Levels grammar is studied within a framework encouraging students to notice that grammar and lexicon are indeed markers of culture. In core language courses and in optional courses (see handbook), learners explore texts, written, visual, oral, from popular culture as well as literature, cinema and history individually and collectively – exchanging their different perspectives on the content and their reading approach and also produce their own creative texts. Italian Studies therefore promotes Italian language and culture learning but also an awareness of reading and writing processes. The study of Italian also teaches life skills such as team work, time management, negotiation and independent learning.

International careers

Italian Studies offers you the opportunity to study at the University of Bologna – the oldest in Europe, and the University of Siena as an exchange student. Students who have participated in exchange programs have international careers in foreign affairs, UNESCO, art. Graduates in Italian also hold positions in libraries, schools and universities, law and accountancy, journalism, interpreting and translating and industry.
