Brynrefail Trust for the Classical LanguagesAwards for students proceeding with the study of Ancient Greek or LatinThe purpose of the Brynrefail Trust is to encourage the study of the ancient languages of the Greek and Roman world at the Australian National University. Two benefactors who have been impressed, over a number of years, with the Classics Museum and the work of the Classics Program have endowed a scheme to encourage undergraduate students to undertake and continue with the study of Latin and Ancient Greek. They hope that the Awards will attract students from all Faculties to consider studying the languages of the classical world, in the belief that knowledge of these languages opens the door to understanding many of the institutions and traditions of Western society today. Specifically, these awards are distributed as follows: At the end of Semester 1: At the end of Semester 2: The student who wins the bursary will be awarded $500, being the approximate equivalent of the cost of HECS charges for one first-year semester-length course. The award is conditional on effective enrolment in the next course in the sequence for the major. Under normal circumstances it will not be available to students who hold major scholarships, such as National Undergraduate Scholarships. Students who wish to apply for the Brynrefail Award should complete the application form, which may be obtained from your lecturer or from Ms Francesca Foppoli, School Administrator, School of Language Studies, Baldessin Precinct Building. They should attach a brief statement (no more than one page in length) for the consideration of the Brynrefail Committee, in which they should set out the reasons for their commitment to the study of Latin or Ancient Greek. The closing date for applications in Semester 1 2008 is Friday 20 June; in Semester 2 it is Friday 28 November. For further information contact Elizabeth Minchin (Elizabeth.Minchin@anu.edu.au)
