1970 Population Systematics of the Gorilla. J. Zool. 161:287-300.

The definitive paper on gorilla taxonomy, in which I divided Gorilla gorilla into three subspecies: G.g.gorilla (Western), G.g.graueri (Eastern Lowland) and G.g.beringei (Mountain).

1979 (with Kenhelm W. Stott, Jr). Systematic relationships of Gorillas from Kahuzi, Tshiaberimu and Kayonza. Folia Primatol. 32:161-179.

We allocate Kahuzi gorillas to G.g.graueri and confirm this allocation for those from Tshiaberimu; but both, in their separate ways, approach beringei somewhat. Gorillas from Kayonza (the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest) are probably G.g.beringei .

1985 The Case of the Pygmy Gorilla: a cautionary tale for cryptozoology. Cryptozoology 4:37-44.

Gorilla mayêma was originally described from the Atlantic coast of Congo. A series of misunderstandings resulted in it entering some lists as a separate species, a “pygmy” gorilla, from eastern Congo-Zaire (DRC), entirely spuriously. There is no “pygmy gorilla”.

1986 Systematics of the Great Apes. Comparative Primate Biology 1:187-217.

In support of the Great Ape Project, but drawing attention to some anomalies.

2000 What, if anything, is taxonomy? Gorilla Journal, 21:12-15.

Explaining why Eastern Gorillas ought now to be separated as a full species, Gorilla beringei (with two subspecies: G.b.beringei and G.b.graueri).
