Bovini

1969 The Taxonomy of the Anoa. Beaufortia (Amsterdam) 17:1-12.

The Anoas (dwarf buffaloes) of Sulawesi comprise two distinct species: a lowland species ( Bubalus depressicornis ) and a mountain species ( B.quarlesi ). (Today I would probably resurrect the genus Anoa for these species, and it may be that the taxonomic situation is more complex than can be accounted for by just two species).

In those days I was too much of a taxonomic lumper. Procapra diversicornis , which I placed as a subspecies of P.przewalskii , is probably a distinct species.

1993 (with M.Karami). A mammal species new for Iran: Gazella gazella Pallas, 1766 (Artiodactyla: Bovidae). J.Sci.I.R.Iran, 4:81-89.

The Arabian Gazelle, Gazella gazella, not hitherto recorded from Iran, is the species living on Forur Island. It is related to G.g.muscatensis (possibly itself a distinct species) from the Batinah Coast of Oman, but is subspecifically different and is named G.g.dareshurii, in honour of Mr Bijan Dareshuri, Biologist of Fars Province, Iran.

1993 The Chinkara (Gazella bennetti) in Iran, with the description of two new subspecies. J.Sci.I.R.Iran 4:166-178.

Chinkara has a much wider distribution in Iran than has been commonly recognized. Two new subspecies are described: G.b.shikarii and G.b.karamii . The first of these names honours Mr. Jaffar Shikarii, chief Game Guard of the Bahram-e-Gour Protected Area in southern Iran, who represents the new, highly dedicated, generation of wildlife guards; his son and his brother have both been killed by poachers. Dr Mahmoud Karami, after whom the other new subspecies is named, is an eminent biologist at the College of Natural Resources, Karaj.
