The Goethe Society
offers an opportunity to join one of Canberra’s most unusual and oldest societies. We meet regularly to enjoy a varied program that covers a wide range of themes - political, literary, historical, cultural and social. These gatherings take the form of lectures, discussions, film evenings, visits to galleries or the occasional social event. All our regular gatherings finish with refreshments, and no lecture is so formal that it is not followed by a lively informal discussion. Generally our meetings have a theme linked to Germany, its language and culture, or to Europe in a broader sense, or to other parts of the world and other eras that have some link to Germany. Whenever possible, talks are held in German, and since 1956 our meetings have provided a real chance to enjoy a spirited discussion in the language of Goethe, whose broad interests we share.
The Goethe Society is also proud to each year provide the Goethe Prizes awarded to the best student in each year of the German Studies course at the ANU.
We also cooperate with other cultural groups and institutions in Canberra to organise specific events. These groups include:
The Goethe Society welcomes all new members and is always looking forward to increasing the range of its activities. Come to our gatherings, join the Society and get involved – there is always room on the committee for anyone with ideas and willing to help!
