Many of them were involved in the Somerset woolen industry, and Nathaniel himself began as a weaver. He had moved to the Bourton area by 1720 and began a linen manufacturing business. This later diversified into bed-tick manufacturing, in which his 3 sons (James, Nathaniel & William) were involved. A wholesale warehouse was established in London and the eldest son moved there and began selling direct to the London market (this caused a lot of resentment in the trade as it cut out the middlemen).1
