Other information; His daughter Martha was baptised 11 months after his burial. It was not specifically noted that she was baptised posthumously. Perhaps she was a few months old. In the 1841 census, Sarah is living with Martha, and there is no husband present. There was no other man called James SMART in Gillingham, so I am confident it is the same man. In the 1851 census, Martha gives her age as 38 years, which matches with a birthyear of late 1812.

The age at death doesn't match a birth year of 1771, but it is possible that the age given (or transcribed) was wrong. It is also possible that the man who married Ann TURLE was different from the man who married Sarah BARNES. There is no burial record for Ann TURLE, but several burial records are illegible in Silton in the 1790's, and she might be amongst them. Perhaps the banns for the marriage to Sarah BARNES might specify whether he was a widower or a bachelor.

It seems that this is a lot of wives (4 in total). Not impossible, but unlikely. Since he apparently had two living sons named James (b.1799 and b.1806) this would also tend to indicate that there was more than one man named James SMART. Perhaps the one buried in 1801 was the one who married Amy (Emma) GIBBS.
