These, however, were not Ainslie’s only children – William Richard was born to Harriet, a Stourhead servant, in 1857, and Alfred Albert to Emma, (after an assignation in the romantic lakeside Gothic Cottage), whose parents lived by the Gardens entrance. Ainslie took good care of both boys and their mothers, housing them, paying for their education and later ensuring his sons’ employment, William eventually working on the Hoare family estate, Raincliff Station, in New Zealand, and Alfred running his own market gardening businesses in Somerset, Wiltshire and Bristol.
