Removal from Penselwood to Stourton. I was born at Bourton where my parents then resided but belonged to Charlton Horethorne, Somerset. When about 2 years old I moved with my parents to Gasper and went to work when aged about 6 or 7 years for Mr Upward. Worked for him for 15 years, except one year when I worked for Charles SHEPHERD. I then followed the trade of a shoemaker. It is about 32 years since I married Catherine my present wife, with whom I have had 13 children. Eleven of them are now living. Six are supporting themselves. Remainder at home with my wife and I namely Frances (16), Jane (14), George (12), Catherine (10) and Mark (8).³

Poor Law

Poor Law Records dated 25 September 1843 of Stourton, Wiltshire, England provide the following information about John HURDEN: John HURDING, shoemaker of Penselwood, aged abut 64 years. Parents were Stephen and Mary HURDING (both long since dead). I was born in Bourton. Their place of settlement was Charlton Horethorne. My father died about 46 years ago, leaving my mother and four small children living at Gasper. About 37 years ago in Stourton I married Catherine my present wife. My brother is Charles HURDING. Order of removal from Penselwood to Stourton quashed.
