Biography of WILLIAM HOARE OF BATH
by Julian Simon Fine Art Ltd William Hoare was a portrait painter in oil and crayons.
Hoare studied under Grisoni, an Italian portrait painter working in England, whom he accompanied on his return to Italy in 1728. After living abroad for nine years and most of that in Rome, Hoare returned to England and thence to Bath where he settled.
Hoare was considered the most fashionable portrait painter to live in Bath and was the most successful and employed painter there until Gainsborough arrived in 1759!
Hoare was the favourite portrait painter of the Duke of Newcastle and his family and political associates.
Hoare exhibited at the Society of Artists of Great Britain from 1760 to 1762, the Royal Academy from 1770 to 1779.
An altarpiece by Hoare is to be found in St Michael's church, Bath.
_______________________________________
His father apprenticed him to Guiseppi Grisoni with whom Hoare travelled to Rome in 1728. On returning to England in 1738, Hoare settled in Bath, where he became a governor of the hospital. _______________________________________ Hoare was born in Eye, Suffolk, in 1707 and died in Bath in 1792. He moved to Bath in 1739, following his return from Italy and remained Bath's most successful and fashionable artist for twenty years, until Thomas Gainsborough's arrival in 1759. He exhibited at Suffolk Street from 1761 to 1762 and at the Royal Academy between 1770 and 1779.
Hoare was a renowned and serious portrait painter who particularly favoured pastels as a medium, a difficult technique which he mastered whilst travelling in Italy from 1728 for nine years. Throughout his career he painted many wonderful portraits, such as this one, which capture both a likeness of the sitter as well as a charm that lifts them above other contemporary artists.

| Birth* | Mary Ann HOBBS was born in 1815 at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. |
| Marriage* | She married Thomas SMART, son of Thomas SMART and Sabra MILLS, on 24 October 1837 at St Peter's, Stourton, Wiltshire, England. Botp. Bch. Spr. No details on bride's father.1 |

| Death* | Mary Ann HOBBS died in 1884 at Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Burial* | She was buried on 20 July 1884 at Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Census 1861* | She was aged 45 in the 1861 census and lived at Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Census 1851* | She was aged 35 in the 1851 census and lived at Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Census 1871* | She was aged 55 in the 1871 census and lived at Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Note* | Other information; Mary Ann HOBBS married Thomas SMART in 1837 and they produced 12 children. Mary Ann appeared in every census from 1841 to 1881, with the same age and birthplace, so she is clearly the same woman. Thomas died in 1861. In 1861 she was a widow and in 1865 one of her children married, and Thomas SMART was listed as deceased. Mary Ann re-married in 1871 to a widower, John GREEN, but the marriage certificate shows her father's name as James COWLEY. This makes no sense, as her maiden name was HOBBS and she was a spinster when she first married. The two possiblities are that she was NOT a spinster when she married, or that she was a spinster and was born illegitimately. Her mother would have been surnamed HOBBS and her father was apparently James COWLEY. |
| Census 1881* | She was aged 65 in the 1881 census and lived at Stourton Lane, Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Married Name | Her married name was SMART. |
| Married Name | Her married name was GREEN. |
| Name Variation | She was also known as COWLEY. This version not seen, but her father was identified as James COWLEY at her second marriage. |
| Census 1841* | She was aged 25 in the 1841 census and lived at Stourton, Wiltshire, England. |
| Residence* | She lived at Stourton. |
