When Mary was conceived, her mother was living in Norfolk and Matthew GAUNT was living in Wiltshire. He had been there since 10 Mar 1780. Mathew's father said that Elizabeth had had another child after Mathew left. The baptism records shows Mary as the daughter of Mathew and Elizabeth GANT. I believe that this is incorrect.

Doesn't know where he was born. He ran away from his father and mother when aged seven years and travelled about the country of Norfolk where his father lived. Served Henry HOARE Esq as a Carter in Stourton. Entered Mr HOARE's service 9th or 10th of March, 1780, but was put out of service after six months for 'using the Horses ill'. His parents resided in the parish of How, Norfolk. Has a wife, Elizabeth and a son, John, aged one year nine months.
2 Apr 1784 Mathew GAUNT's father was then interviewed at How. He said that his son belongs in How. He have (sic) a wife and child there in the Industry House. He was married in the year 1777 but never lived with her since. She has had a child since.5

I'm not sure why he was called GAUNT or GRANT later - perhaps his parents' marriage was deemed invalid because Ann had already had a child by Albin's brother Daniel. Techincally, marriage to a brother's wife was illegal, and producing a child, even without marriage, was considered to have the same effect in barring marriage to affinal kin.
