Poor Law Records dated 11 December 1783 of Stourton, Wiltshire, England provide the following information about Matthew GAUNT: Matthew GAUNT About Twenty-five years of age. Doesn't know where he was born. He ran away from his father and mother when aged seven years and travelled about the country of Norfolk where his father lived. Served Henry HOARE Esq as a Carter in Stourton. Entered Mr HOARE's service 9th or 10th of March, 1780, but was put out of service after six months for 'using the Horses ill'. His parents resided in the parish of How, Norfolk. Has a wife, Elizabeth and a son, John, aged one year nine months.

2 Apr 1784 Mathew GAUNT's father was then interviewed at How. He said that his son belongs in How. He have (sic) a wife and child there in the Industry House. He was married in the year 1777 but never lived with her since. She has had a child since.⁵
