I would guess that he was born in Dorset, since he lived in Bourton as an adult, but there is no proof of this.

A Robert Read SHEPHERD bbs of Elizabeth was baptised in Gillingham on 26 Apr 1795. It's possible that it is this man, but there is no record of a marriage of ELizabeth SHEPHERD to anyone surnamed CARTER.

Other information; In 1851, Robert's wife Fanny was in Penselwood, shown as married, but Robert not present. A possible candidate for her husband was Robert CARTER, aged 50 years and married (but with no wife present), born in Plymouth, Devon. He was a lodger in Minster in Sheppey in Kent, a shipwright at H.M. Dockyards. Occupation does not fit.

The mother of Thomas CARTER was shown in the Bonham records as Helen. I believe that this is an error. There is no record of a marriage b/w Robert CARTER and Helen or Ellen, there is no burial for Helen or Ellen CARTER, there are no subsequent children of this person. Frances SHEPHERD's illegimate daughter Louisa was also shown as CARTER, which implies (but doesn't prove) that Robert CARTER was her father. She was born in 1820 and Thomas CARTER in 1821, which would imply (but not prove) a marriage sometime b/w those two dates. If Frances SHEPHERD is identified with "Helen" then her son Thomas CARTER was a 2nd cousin to his wife Mary Ann MAIDMENT, which is what the Bonham consanguinity dispensation says. So I am allocating "Helen" and Frances SHEPHERD as the same person.
