Vanuatu Cultural and Historic Sites Survey (VCHSS)

The VCHSS maintains the national inventory of important sites in Vanuatu.

The VCHSS has the following aims:

• build and maintain a database of sites of cultural, archaeological and historic significance in the country;
• conduct surveys to identify and document these sites;
• train the ni-Vanuatu staff in techniques of survey planning and execution, including in archaeological excavation;
• disseminate survey results, through both written and oral reports;
• assist the protection and conservation of important sites in the country.

The VCHSS organises and undertakes site surveys through the locally-based fieldworkers of the Cultural Centre. It is also responsible for performing site impact assessments for new development projects. The VCHSS works closely with landowners and environmental agencies, including the Department of Forestry and the Vanuatu Environment Unit.
