The National Museum houses a collection of some 3,500 artefacts from all over the country. It displays some of these in Vanuatu's first purpose-built museum, opened in 1995 on the hill overlooking Port Vila.

With limited financial resources, the Museum does not have the ability to purchase new work, and relies mainly on donations. Nevertheless, the collection is an impressive reflection of the variety of cultures in Vanuatu, and the diversity of material produced around the islands.

The museum encourages the revival of disappearing art and craft forms, as well as supporting artists working in new forms and media. An artist in residence at the Museum produces fine pottery, some in the style of the 'Wusi' pots from the island of Santo (like this one).Wusi pot
