JOHN TUKEY




Tukey

John Wilder Tukey was born on 16 June 1915 in Massachusetts, U.S.A. He attended Brown University until 1937 and then obtained a PhD in mathematics at Princeton University. During World War II he worked on statistical problems associated with weapons development (such as the accuracy of range finders on bombers). After the was he researched at Princeton and with Bell Labs, concentrating on the study of complex data. He is largely responsible for the development of Exploratory Data Analysis, although his contributions are found in many areas of statistics.
