Distribution of Backed artefacts

A great many papers have been written about the distribution of backed artefacts in Australia. Much of the debate has centered on whether there is a northern limit to backed artefact distribution or whether their apparent absence from the northern areas was a product of a lack of knowledge about assemblages in the north. A gradual northward creep in the the known location of backed artefacts, and hence in the infered northern boundary, has continued over the last decade and suggests that our information on backed artefact distributions was limited.

Map of Backed artefact distribution                 Nevertheless, the systematic review by Smith and Cundy (1985) indicated that backed artefacts really were absent in the north, although it is not clear exactly where the northern limit of the distribution is located. The map on the left shows the distribution of backed artefacts as currently reported. Within the distribution area there are variations in the relative abundance of backed artefacts in assemblages.
