The School of Archaeology & Anthropology

The School of Archaeology and Anthropology is concerned with the documentation and analysis of diverse social worlds from the perspectives of three academic disciplines: Archaeology is that set of methods, techniques and procedures that utilises the material record to learn about the past. Social anthropology is the study of cultural similarities and differences in the contemporary globalised world. Biological anthropology merges zoology (primatology and ecology), medicine and human biology (health, population structure and genetics), and geology and palaeontology (human evolution) with archaeology and anthropology.

Academic staff in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology have international reputations for research undertaken across many areas including indigenous Australia and the Pacific, through Asia, South America, India and Europe. As well as offering undergraduate programs in the three core fields, the School also convenes programs in Archaeological Practice, Forensic Anthropology, Development Studies, Australian Indigenous Studies, and Health, Medicine and the Body. Diverse and innovative postgraduate coursework and research programs are also offered.
